Dyer County was my last run of the day. A day that had started with a 3.5 hour drive, a trip to the Discovery Park of America and two other runs. A day that would finish with me teaching a virtual piano lesson in a hotel room and opening a can of beans with a knife (since I forgot my can opener).
Don’t worry. Rereading that stresses me out too.
Quick Facts
County: Dyer
City: Dyersburg (they match!)
Trail: Okeena Park
Distance: like half a mile lol
Date: 12/17
The County
Dyer County is kind of the intersection of Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee. It’s not directly on the border, but it’s the largest city in the Tri-State Area (what was the original place to be called the Tri-State Area???)
The Wikipedia article on Dyer County contains this sentence with absolutely zero context so I shall reproduce it in the same way:
Around 1823, Louis Philippe I stopped briefly near the mouth of the Obion River and killed a bald eagle.
Dyersburg is also the only highway connection (besides Memphis) to the western side of the Mississippi. It’s also the only highway bridge over the river between Cairo, Illinois, (100 miles away) and Memphis. (There’s a ferry in Kentucky.)
The Tennessee State Encyclopedia (love her) says that Dyersburg hosted two large revivals in 1904 and 1907, but I can’t find these mentioned anywhere else (on the first page of Google lol)
The Route
I looked several times for a trail in Dyer County, and all I could find were a few parks. I searched again just now, and there’s a nature trail at the local community college (all my love to community colleges) that probably would have been better, but oh well.
I have no highlights or misadventures from this run lol It was so cold and I had run so much that day already I did a loop of a local community park and called it a day. #NoRegrets (I can’t handle the cold in case you haven’t noticed)
(ran out of pics so here’s a look at the glamorous life of a piano teacher on the road)
A Regret/Wish
I wish I could have driven to Missouri. I literally had no time as I had to be at the hotel at a certain time to teach a piano lesson, but I wish I could have just driven to it to say I’ve been there :/ Oh well. Maybe I’ll take a trip to St. Louis sometime.
